The late kitchen is a second shift. The house is quieter. The day is supposed to be over. Someone is still opening a cabinet, not always because they are hungry.
Sometimes it is habit. Sometimes it is the first private minute all day. Sometimes it is leftover noise from a meal that did not settle the mind. Naming that is more useful than pretending it is only “snacking.”
You can notice the hour without turning it into a courtroom. What time does it start. Is it after a short lunch. After wine. After a long scroll. After a fight you did not have out loud. The pattern is the point. The shame is optional, and it does not help.
Some people close the kitchen with a simple rule that is kind, not theatrical. Some people eat a planned evening snack so the cabinet is not a debate. Some people are talking with a clinician about appetite that never clocks out. Those are different tools. They can sit in the same drawer.
This note will not give you a curfew. It will keep treating nighttime appetite as part of how you feel in your body, not as a secret you have to hide from a community.
