The word people avoid

Maintenance is a word people skip. It sounds like a holding pattern. It sounds like you failed to keep going down. It sounds like the boring chapter.

It is also the chapter most adults actually live in. Weight moves. Then it sits. Energy has a season. Appetite gets quieter, then louder again. A body that stays roughly where it is, while life stays loud, is not a scandal.

The problem is the story we attached to “progress.” If the only allowed plot is a smaller number, maintenance looks like death. If the plot is how you feel in your clothes, at 3 p.m., and at the late kitchen, maintenance can be the point.

Some people are aiming for a change. Some people are trying to keep a change they already made. Some people are trying to stop fighting a war with Tuesday. Those are different jobs. They can use some of the same tools. They do not need the same speech.

If you are in a holding season, you are still in the community. We will keep writing as if that season has a name, and the name is allowed.
