Appetite

The restaurant table

A Good State · A short note

The restaurant table

A restaurant table is a social event wearing a menu. Other people order. Bread arrives. The lighting is kind. You were supposed to have an easy night, and then the old commentary sits down with you.

You do not have to win dinner. You can order what you want and stay in the conversation. You can share something. You can eat slowly because the night is the point. You can also decide, without a speech, that this plate is a treat and tomorrow is a regular Tuesday.

The unhelpful move is turning the table into a test. Every restaurant cannot be a referendum on your character. Friends can tell when you are elsewhere, arguing with a menu in your head.

If eating out has become loaded, that is worth noticing. If it has become rare because it feels unsafe, that is worth a kinder plan, and maybe a clinician who understands appetite. A note on a website will not choreograph your Saturday.

We will keep writing as if pleasure and appetite can sit at the same table. They do, in grown-up life, more often than the internet admits.

This note is for general education. It is not medical advice, a diagnosis, or a treatment plan. A Good State is a publication, not a clinic or a pharmacy. Talk with a licensed clinician before you change how you eat, move, sleep, or take medicine.
